Usually, I'm not a fan of waking up before the sun emerges through the dark, early morning sky. In fact, I am more than likely to be cranky as, and in danger of biting someone's head off, if I am woken up that early in the morning for no valid, substantial reason.
But I did just that yesterday morning, fumbling and stumbling my way through the still pitch-black bedroom and house at 5 in the morning. Not for no apparent reason, I can assure you. I have been invited to a breakfast meeting down the coast and didn't trust my ability to drive in a straight line and safely along the highway. So I had to wake up this early, beautify myself to the point that I could FOOL everybody that I wasn't still bleary-eyed, left the house at 6AM to get to work and be picked up by one of my bosses to get to the breakfast venue.
It was the beginning of winter here, and the sun didn't greet us until almost 7AM. Coupled that with the fact that yesterday was an overcast day, it did little more than change the colour of the sky from titanium grey to a subtle light blue.
I had a lovely time at breakfast, networking with those secretaries from other schools, and listened to a light-hearted, engaging guest speaker. What started as an early morning didn't end until somewhat late as I also had to take minutes of after-hours meeting at a different location. I left the office at 4.30 in the afternoon, to endure a close-to-50 minutes journey to the meeting venue, and in the course of twenty or so minutes, saw the sky transformed yet again, from barely blue to something resembling charcoal, and watched the lights of the vehicles around me shine so brightly.
It's something simple, something that greets and ends each and every day. It is something that you take for granted most times, just knowing that a new day will arrive. And yet, having not been accustomed to seeing it, the sight always strikes me anew, and fills me with the most wonderful sense of... awe; of peace; of calm.
